A Day in the Life at the Moon Magic Chocolate Factory

Behind the Scenes — inside the Moon Magic chocolate factory
The short answer: Most people never see where their chocolate is actually made. This is a real, unglamorous day inside the Moon Magic chocolate factory — prepping, producing, cleaning, and repeating. It's the everyday reality behind every Moon Magic Bite, and it exists because we decided to stop outsourcing and build our own production space, where we could finally see, test, and control every detail ourselves.
Where Moon Magic Bites are actually made
Pick up a Moon Magic Bite and there's a whole world you don't see behind it: the room where it's made, the prep before a run, the cleaning after, and the quiet repetition that turns a recipe into a real product. It's not a highlight reel. It's prepping, producing, cleaning, repeating — the honest rhythm of a working chocolate factory.
We film it because we think the behind-the-scenes reality is more interesting, and more trustworthy, than a polished ad. This is where the magic actually happens.
Why we make it ourselves instead of outsourcing
For two and a half years, Moon Magic worked with several co-manufacturers. The problem was that our confections were too unique to plug into existing systems built for standard products — and it got expensive, fast.
One number tells the story: $70,000 spent on UPS courier charges alone, shipping samples back and forth across the US–Canada border hundreds of times as we tried to dial the product in from a distance.
But the worst part wasn't the cost. It was the lack of control. Working through someone else's facility, there was no way to see exactly what was happening, catch the small nuances that made all the difference, or learn from them in real time. (We told that full story in Chapter One of our Founder Series, and how we built the factory in Chapter Two.)
What changed when we opened our own factory
So founder Shawn Brown made the call to open Moon Magic's own production space. And everything changed.
Suddenly the team could see, test, adjust, and learn in real time. Every detail was visible. Every variable was something we could investigate rather than guess at. Over months, we worked through every problem that had been unsolvable before — the exact problems that no amount of shipping samples across a border could fix.
Sometimes the only way forward is doing it yourself.
Full transparency, on purpose
The Moon Magic channel is a fully transparent, behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to build a chocolate company — its own factory, its own R&D, and every real challenge along the way, now including the journey into retail. No fluff, no highlight reel — just the honest reality of building a food startup from the ground up.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Moon Magic chocolate made?
In Moon Magic's own chocolate factory, a production space the company built and runs itself rather than outsourcing to a co-manufacturer.
Why did Moon Magic stop using co-manufacturers?
Moon Magic's confections were too unique for systems built around standard products, which made outsourcing expensive — including $70,000 in UPS courier charges shipping samples across the US–Canada border — and, more importantly, left the team without the control needed to see, test, and refine the product.
What does a day at the Moon Magic factory look like?
Prepping, producing, cleaning, and repeating. It's an unglamorous, honest production routine — the everyday reality behind each Moon Magic Bite.
